Starting Seeds Indoors
Your Guide to Starting Seeds Successfully Indoors
Starting seeds is one of the most rewarding parts of gardening! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced gardener, these tips will help you get your seeds off to a strong start.
What You'll Need
• Quality seeds from Backyard Harvest Seed Company
• Seed starting trays or small containers with drainage holes
• Seed starting mix or potting soil
• Water spray bottle or gentle watering can
• Grow lights or a sunny windowsill
• Plant labels to track your varieties
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Choose the Right Time
Check the seed packet for timing. Most seeds should be started 6-8 weeks before your last frost date.
2. Prepare Your Containers
Fill your seed trays or containers with moistened seed starting mix. The soil should be damp but not soggy.
3. Plant Your Seeds
Follow the depth guidelines on your seed packet. As a general rule, plant seeds 2-3 times as deep as they are wide. Gently cover with soil and pat down lightly.
4. Provide Warmth and Moisture
Most seeds germinate best at 65-75°F. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Cover trays with plastic wrap or a humidity dome until seeds sprout.
5. Give Them Light
Once seedlings emerge, they need 12-16 hours of light daily. Place them under grow lights or in a bright, south-facing window.
6. Thin and Transplant
When seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, thin to the strongest plant per cell. Transplant to larger containers if needed before moving outdoors.
7. Harden Off
Before planting outside, gradually expose seedlings to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days to prevent shock.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Planting seeds too deep
• Overwatering or letting soil dry out completely
• Not providing enough light
• Skipping the hardening off process
• Starting seeds too early or too late
